Choosing the right wood for your deck, of course, depends on your budget, but also on your San Diego location. We prefer building wood decks with with Redwood, Douglas Fir and Composite Decking lumber because of their proven durability.
• Redwood – This lightweight wood with an appealing red hue is decay resistant and easy to work with. We recommend the clear heart grade, which is has few knots, for a quality look. It should be sealed each year to maintain its vivid color.
• Douglas Fir – A strong, highly durable wood that resists footmarks and dings. It is less likely to warp or buckle after seasons of moist weather. We recommend a vertical grain. Given that it is widely available, Douglas Fir is not as pricey as Redwood.
• Composite Decking – Composite lumber looks like wood, but won’t splinter. It is made from wood by-products and plastic. It, too, is durable and less expensive than wood. Solid composite decking is heavy and strong, a good support lumber.
